Charles William Mitchell and Elvire Stegen (Part 2)

Here are some pictures.

Unfortunately, I don't have any inbetween pictures. This is a picture of Charles W. Mitchell in 1913 while he is on a mission in France.

This is a picture of Charles W. Mitchell and I believe his wife Hazel. I think this is in Sparks, Nevada based on the address for some of the letters. I was unable to match the house that shows up on google maps street view with this picture due to a lack of comparable features and lack of a view of the back yard in street view. However, based on the date on the picture and addresses from letters, it is a good guess anyway. The other problem is that the house may have been on the opposite side of A street in Sparks. Unfortunately, Interstate 80 now occupies the other side of A Street. Fortunately though, there are Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps for Sparks in th
e year 1942 and even on microfiche. I just need to get a copy on order to determine original layout prior to the freeway. The picture does look very similar to what street view shows though. I'm relatively certain this is Sparks.

This is a picture of Elvire in 1933 which is the time frame we are talking about. I have pictures of her when she is older for those who are old enough to remember her if you are interested. She died when I was two years old, so I don't remember her at all.

Here is the first of about a dozen or so letters that I have copies of. This one is from Charles William Mitchell to his son, Morris Mitchell dated June 19, 1933. Refer to the previous post to learn how to use the Scribd controls.

Why did grandpa change the spelling of his name?

I've been thinking of smart ass comments to respond with all night and just can't decide which one to write, so I will write all of them in the order of quality starting from least to greatest.

1. Because he is the one in charge. (That one was for you Dad)

2. He was tired of getting his ass kicked by the other kids.

3. Some people called him the space cowboy. Some called him the gangster of love.

I actually have heard someone (probably him tell me why), but I can't remember for sure. I have a friend whose parents moved here from France and named him Olivie (pronounced Oliv-ee-ay). He changed it to Oliver. Good reason I imagine. ;-)

All good reasons I guess.
