Charles William Mitchell and Elvire Stegen (Part 2)

Here are some pictures.

Unfortunately, I don't have any inbetween pictures. This is a picture of Charles W. Mitchell in 1913 while he is on a mission in France.

This is a picture of Charles W. Mitchell and I believe his wife Hazel. I think this is in Sparks, Nevada based on the address for some of the letters. I was unable to match the house that shows up on google maps street view with this picture due to a lack of comparable features and lack of a view of the back yard in street view. However, based on the date on the picture and addresses from letters, it is a good guess anyway. The other problem is that the house may have been on the opposite side of A street in Sparks. Unfortunately, Interstate 80 now occupies the other side of A Street. Fortunately though, there are Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps for Sparks in th
e year 1942 and even on microfiche. I just need to get a copy on order to determine original layout prior to the freeway. The picture does look very similar to what street view shows though. I'm relatively certain this is Sparks.

This is a picture of Elvire in 1933 which is the time frame we are talking about. I have pictures of her when she is older for those who are old enough to remember her if you are interested. She died when I was two years old, so I don't remember her at all.

Here is the first of about a dozen or so letters that I have copies of. This one is from Charles William Mitchell to his son, Morris Mitchell dated June 19, 1933. Refer to the previous post to learn how to use the Scribd controls.

Charles William Mitchell and Elvire Stegen (Part 1)

I have been playing around with Scribd as a method for storing and posting pdf files on the blog. This is my first test. I think you can access and download the pdf by clicking on the link below. Otherwise, if you are just interested in reading it, then I have embeded it into this post for reading as well. Hopefully this works. More to come in the future.

As for this particular document, I am posting it as a first installment of a series of documents (mostly letters) related to my great-grandparents, Charles William Mitchell and Elvire Stegen. It is an interesting story. It is really quite sad, but interesting nonetheless. I chose this document as the first for a couple of reasons. The first is that it is the chronological beginning and the second reason is that it shows what happened to cause the rest. I hope to be able to order the case file for the entire trial, but I'm awaiting a response from Utah State Archives at this point.

Note that in the upper right hand corner is a little maximize and minimize button. If you click on it once, it will bring the page to full screen so it is easier to read. If you click on it again once the page is in full screen, it will return to the small version on the blog.

Belgium

In the pictures that I obtained from Aunt Yvonne, there are two post cards with a picture of this statue on it:

There is an "X" next to the person on the lower right of the statue on the postcards and written on one of them are the words, "Grandfather Lejeune." A note below the postcard says, "Great Grandfather Lejeune (Grandmother Stegen's father). Near as I can tell, Aunt Yvonne wrote the notes because the only Lejeune woman along that line to become a Stegen would be Philomene. That puts grandpa mitchell and Aunt Yvonne's generation as grandkids. Philomene Stegen's father was supposedly Jean Joseph Lejeune. The statue in question is one done by Armand Cattier in honor of John Cockerill. Cockerill is the one on top of the statue.

So, how do we know the individual on the lower righthand section of the statue in the picture above is our ancestor?

Here is an up close shot of that person:

Also, why is he on a statue in honor of John Cockerill. If I knew french, I'm sure I'd get further, but a surface search in english produced this book. So far, this is the only connection between the two names that I've found.

Here is some info on the place associated with the Lejeune name:

Aunt Yvette, if you happen to read this, next time you talk to Aunt Yvonne, could you please ask her about this. If you would rather I can call her. Just send me her phone number in an e-mail.

Thanks, Joe
